As Executive Vice President of 1/st Racing  and Acting President of the Maryland Jockey Club , Mike Rogers has played an integral part in leading the preparation and the execution of the last three Preakness events.

In this C-Suite Insights, we discuss Mike’s experience with Maryland’s equine industry and the surrounding Mid Atlantic market.

Please tell us a little bit about your company.
1/st is North America’s preeminent Thoroughbred racing and pari-mutuel wagering company and includes the 1/st Racing & Gaming, 1/st Content, 1/st Technology and 1/st Experience businesses, while advocating for and driving the 1/st Horse Care mission.

What is your favorite activity to do/place to visit in Maryland with your family/friends?
I enjoy trail running so I have been exploring all the various trail systems in Maryland.

How has your organization’s experience been with Maryland’s workforce?
Our organization has had a very good experience working with the Maryland workforce. Over the years, we've found Maryland workers to be highly skilled, dedicated, and adaptable, contributing significantly to various projects and initiatives we have worked on including the Preakness Stakes , the second leg of the Triple Crown.

What makes Maryland a great state to live and work in?
Maryland's strategic location along the East Coast and is within easy reach of major cities such as Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and even New York. This proximity allows for a wealth of cultural, educational, and entertainment opportunities for residents. Additionally, Maryland offers beautiful natural landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. Folks can enjoy activities such as trail running, mountain biking, hiking, boating, and exploring coastal towns.

Which nearby key market do you do the most business with and how does your Maryland base enhance that?
Our organization operates within a nationally regulated sport, subject to a multitude of federal laws. The advantageous proximity to Washington D.C. allows us easy access to key decision-makers who directly influence our industry.

What’s the best piece of life advice you’ve ever received?
Do not get stressed about things that are beyond your control.

What's your favorite Maryland dish to make or eat?
The Maryland Jockey Club often has a great Maryland Rockfish on their menu that I really enjoy.
