Distribution by Industry
Maryland's economy is dominated by service-producing industries, accounting for two-thirds of the state's employment in 2011.
Goods Producing Industries Highly diversified manufacturing base with 16 of the 20 major manufacturing groups well represented. Centered in computer and electronic products with over 20,000 workers. According to TechAmerica, Maryland ranks fourth among the states in space and defense systems manufacturing with 10,000 jobs; sixth in computer systems design (62,000 jobs); and eighth in engineering services (31,900 jobs). - Other important durable goods industries include fabricated metal products, transportation equipment and machinery.
For non-durables, major sectors incluide food, chemicals, printing, and plastic and rubber products.
