Governor O'Malley celebrates opening of new Comcast Service Center in Largo

ANNAPOLIS, MD  Thu, Jun 5, 2008

Governor Martin O’Malley joined Prince George’s County Executive Jack B. Johnson and State and local economic development officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony for Comcast’s new Advanced Service Center in Prince George’s County. The 92,000-square foot regional call center brings 500 new full-time jobs to the County, primarily customer service agents who will provide technical support for Comcast High-Speed Internet (CHSI), Comcast Digital Voice (CDV) and various advanced video products.

“Comcast’s commitment to invest and expand in Maryland speaks to the quality of our workforce and the supportive business environment that the State and our partners in Prince George’s County offer for businesses looking to locate or expand,” said Governor O’Malley. “This is an outstanding example of the types of successful partnerships that can occur when State and county governments leverage their resources and work together to provide new economic opportunities.”

“The McCormick Drive site is a perfect location for the Advanced Service Center. Its proximity to the Largo Metro station makes it accessible to all workers. The Class A office center will also provide countless amenities,” said Prince George’s County Executive Jack B. Johnson. “I am pleased that DCAO David Byrd, and Kwasi Holman of the Economic Development Corp. were able to coordinate our agency responses to provide priority project permit assistance and critical support to win the confidence of the site selection committee, which confirms our position that Prince George’s County is Open for Business.”

In December 2007, Comcast announced plans to open the center, which is located at 1301 McCormick Drive in Largo. To assist with project costs, a $500,000 conditional loan, through the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), was used in conjunction with a $50,000 loan pledged by County Executive Johnson through the Prince George’s County’s Incentive Leverage Fund. The company is also eligible for a workforce grant of up to $200,000 from DBED to assist with training needs, as well as local and state property tax credits.

“2007 was a milestone year for Comcast, and we are already gearing up for growth in 2008 across every product and service we offer,” said Curt Pendleton, regional senior vice president for Comcast’s Potomac Region. “Our new Largo call center will help us deliver an improved customer experience and we will be recruiting across the region to expand our team with employees who share a passion for delivering great customer service.”

The new call center features state-of-the-art technology and a host of employee-oriented amenities including an exercise center, auditorium, break rooms, training/meeting facilities and on-site parking. The call center is located just off I-495 and metro accessible, convenient to a host of shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues. Comcast employs more than 4,000 employees throughout the region, including call centers in Rockville, Md.; Silver Spring, Md.; Washington, D.C.; and Manassas, Va.
