Kent County

Kent County MapKent County, founded in 1642, is located on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, directly across from Baltimore, and covers an area of approximately 40 miles from east to west and approximately 10 miles from north to south. The county's boundaries, formed by the Sassafras River to the north, the Chester River to the south, the Delaware/Maryland state border to the east and the Chesapeake Bay to the west, create a delightful peninsula with over 265 miles of tidal shoreline. The shoreline provides both naturalists and sportsmen exceptional recreational opportunities, with its more than 20 marinas, beaches and wildlife areas. Part of the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway, Route 213 bisects Kent County while U.S. Route 301 provides a major north-south artery for commercial transportation. The county's over 100,000 acres of prime farmland provide the second highest crop output in Maryland, with commercial nursery operations representing the most valuable product.

With the county seat located in Chestertown, the county's 740 businesses employ over 7,200 workers, with many employing over 100 individuals. Such diverse businesses as Chester River Health System, Washington College, Dixon Valve & Coupling and David A. Bramble call Kent County home. A strong academic atmosphere is led by the presence of the first college founded in the new United States, Washington College, a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college offering over 25 major fields of study in both undergraduate and graduate programs to approximately 1,400 students.
