How to Register a Maryland Business

NEW: Maryland provides one-stop business registration online through the Central Business Licensing and Registration Portal.   If you are starting a business in Maryland, this site will enable you do the following:

  • Register your business and form the legal business entity with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation
  • Register a business Trade Name with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation
  • Establish your necessary tax accounts with the Comptroller of the Treasury

Local Tax Registration
Local taxes in Maryland require no additional registration.  Local taxes are usually collected as part of the various State tax systems.  Questions about local property taxes collected by the State should be directed to the County Supervisor’s Office of the State Department of Assessments and Taxation for the county where the business is or will be located.
